The fresco is a painting technique also suitable for exterior walls, and does not fear sudden temperature changes.

We are in Cervinia, a town immersed in the heart of the Alps at an altitude of 2,000 metres.
The winters are harsh and the climate changes almost extreme, so much so that it is hard to imagine a wall decoration lasting for a long time outside.
The temperature range is extreme. The cold winter freeze with temperatures well below zero contrasts with a sun that “splits rocks”, as the elders would say.
The fresco also adapts well to this climate, as demonstrated by the one we created for a mountain hotel – Hotel Jumeaux – located in the ski resort of Cervinia.

The fresco painting technique used is the “strappo” method. The design chosen measures about 2×2 metres and is a typical mountain scene depicting ibexes. Our artists created the painting in the Mariani Affreschi workshop. The fresco painting was detached using the “strappo” method – read about how a fresco is created – and was then sent to its destination and placed on the external facade of the hotel.
The canvas was not glued directly on the wall, but on a wooden frame created specifically to be displayed outside. In this way, the fresco was separated from the wall of the façade, allowing it to better withstand the mountain climate as it does not directly touch the external wall.

Of all the painting techniques available for residential and contract use, the fresco is the most durable for outdoor application. The colours of the fresco are less sensitive to sunlight and the product is more resistant to extreme weather conditions, especially the hot/cold effect typical of outdoor environments.
These characteristics are only possible if the fresco is authentic and made according to the ancient “buon fresco” method which dates back to the Renaissance period. The colour is indissolubly fixed in the plaster through the carbonation process, guaranteeing the longevity of the fresco for future generations.
