By definition, angels are semantic of divine messengers. Linked to religious symbology, they have been represented in different ways in various historical periods. In the first biblical representations they were youthful figures without wings and dressed in a tunic. From the Renaissance period onwards, angelic representations became extremely more varied and popular, even outside classical iconography.

One of the most frequent stylistic derivations is the type of angel called cherub (or putto). These winged angels, similar to pagan deities, are represented as small children, often plump and chubby. They are painted on walls or ceilings, carried by clouds, while forming naïve and graceful processions. Sometimes they are also painted as the heads of curly-haired children with two wings on each side.
Cherubs are one of the most popular subjects for wall frescoes, and Mariani Affreschi has extensive experience in this type of pictorial subject.

The paintings depicting angels can be created on a wall or ceiling: simple details inside a rosette, or a complete landscape that covers an entire wall. As always, the decorative designs of our frescoes are customised and therefore completely tailored to the needs of our customers.

The ceiling rosettes are made in our art laboratory and then, thanks to the “strappo” fresco technique (click on this link for an explanation) are transferred to the canvases and shipped to the customer’s home for the final installation.

Angels or putti, messengers of love, with bows and arrows ready to shoot lovers are also in great demand and are ideal subjects for ceiling decorations. A fresco that covers most of the ceiling, therefore with large extensions, can be executed directly at the customer’s home, like this child’s bedroom with guardian angels frescoed both on the walls and ceiling.

The alternative to the mural painted on site is the “strappo” fresco. In this case, the ceiling or wall painting is created entirely by Mariani Affreschi experts using a particular technique studied and elaborated over time which allows the artwork to adhere perfectly to the wall or ceiling.
For ceilings with frescoed angels, the canvas is installed after a meticulous fresco “strappo” sequence. This involves some precise application techniques that Mariani Affreschi has perfected over the years to provide the best service on the market.

Compositions depicting the formation of angels are particularly suitable for smaller paintings to be placed above the bedhead in a bedroom. Once again, the paintings are created using the “strappo” technique. They have the same characteristics as a full-length wall painting, but with smaller dimensions and lower costs.

It should be remembered that the special production technique of the fresco makes it a perennial decoration, which does not require maintenance or restoration over time.

“Because the secret of the fresco is that it never gets tired”.
